American Civil War Maps & Google Earth Overlays

American Civil War Maps has produced a unique package of nearly 200 easily printable Battlefield maps and combined these with the amazing Google Earth application.  The maps show troop positions and movements in all the major battles of the American Civil War.  The easy-to-use maps and Google Earth overlays are aimed at teachers and students alike to help in the understanding of this defining moment in American History.

All the major battles and campaigns are featured, from Fort Sumter, SC to Appomattox Court House, VA, with particular focus on the major battle at Gettysburg, PA, in July 1863.

This map collection is truly unique because it makes extensive use of two tools within the excellent Google Earth application: map overlays and PlaceMarks (also called Points of Interest markers).

These features allow users, at the click of a button, to open Google Earth and zoom into a particular location on the globe instantly.

Google Earth Overlays

These place a map over the real terrain in Google Earth

Placemarks

These locate a specific location:

What does a Google Earth

 map overlay look like?

(Download this overlay in ZIP file)

If you do not have the Google Earth application, this is the overlay the Battle of Lookout Mountain featuring the National Park Service map.  It is important to note that the translucence of the overlay can be easily adjusted within the Google Earth application (in fact the whole map can be moved around to suit the needs of the user).

Google Earth map overlays allows the user to place maps or other diagrams over the visible terrain*; Placemarks pinpoint the exact spot where of an event occurred.

* Map overlays and Placemarks are tools included within the basic Google Earth application which is a free download from Google Inc.  Maps of the major battles have been incorporated into the Google Earth application creating a map overlay which superimposes itself on the real satellite view.   The PlaceMarks have been created to show the user some of the key locations of a battle, both from extensive research of the battle and personal visits to the sites.

The key point about Google Earth overlays is that rather then having just a map to show figuratively what happened in a battle, the overlays and PlaceMarks can take you to the REAL location of the events on the real globe.

I’m a Teacher: what can I do with the Map Collection?

The general idea behind the American Civil War Map Collection is to make the events of this defining moment in American History more accessible to students using modern tools, (this is the whole philosophy of Video History Today which is attempting to build up a video clip collection for students who want to be able to see the real locations in more detail and make their own video documentaries on the key events)

We have all seen maps of historical events but with the incredible Google Earth we can now zoom into the location from above and super impose these maps onto the real battlefield:

The map below is a typical example of a campaign map in the collection (Northern Virginia Campaign 1862):
